After starring in The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Blade Runner, Return of the Jedi, and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom back to back, Ford needed a change of pace. This film certainly gave it to him. Many people began finally taking him seriously as an actor after this film and his role as the hardened cop forced to hide out among the Amish earned him an Academy Award nomination. Before Witness, Lukas Haas had roles in two television movies, including the heartrending Testament. He also had starring roles in The Wizard of Loneliness and Lady in White as well as playing the title character in the tv movie The Ryan White Story. He began branching out into more adult roles in such films as Convicts and Rambling Rose. He can also be seen in Tim Burton's Mars Attacks! but not in Terrence Malick's The Thin Red Line, where all his scenes ending up on the cutting room floor. |
