Mosquito Coast: Memorable Scenes

With all the memorable lines that Allie Fox spouts out throughout the film, one could practically simply list the entire first half of the film as one big long memorable scene. (And if you ever read the book, you will see just how much of Allie's "stream of consciousness" speeches they had to remove.) However, I will try to put down a few of the more memorable scenes and lines that appear in the film.

Scene One: This Place Is A Toilet

Charlie and Allie are driving into town in their pickup truck.

ALLIE
Look around you, how did America get this way? Land of promise, land of opportunity. Give us the wretched refuse of your teeming shores. Have a Coke, watch tv...

CHARLIE
Have a nice day.

ALLIE

Go on welfare, get free money. Turn to crime, crime pays in this country. Why do they put up with it, why do they keep coming? Look around you Charlie, this place is a toilet.

Scene X: Rat Poison

The Fox family spend there first night in Geronimo.

ALLIE
Nobody loves America more than I do, you know. That's why we left, because I couldn't bare to watch. You kids have got to understand this. Like when my mother died, she'd been strong as an ox, fell down, broke her hip, went into the hospital and caught double pneumonia. She's laying in bed dying and I went over and held her hand. She looked up to me and you know what she said? "Why don't you give me some rat poison?" Couldn't listen, couldn't watch, so I went away. People said that I was at the height of callousness, it's not true. I loved her too much to watch her die.

Memorable lines:

Allie Fox: If it's on a map, I can't use it.

Allie Fox: Don't pity those men Charlie. Don't pity this insect, it's not his blood, it's my blood.
